Processing Fee

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version A processing fee is a one-time charge deducted upfront when a loan is disbursed, covering the lender's administrative cost of underwriting the loan - it reduces the amount you actually receive, even though the sanctioned amount looks unchanged.

Typically a percentage of the loan amount, deducted at disbursal rather than billed separately - a ₹5 lakh loan with a 1% processing fee means you actually receive ₹4.95 lakh, while still owing EMIs calculated on the full ₹5 lakh. This fee varies across lenders and is genuinely negotiable in some cases, especially for borrowers with strong credit profiles - worth comparing across lenders alongside the interest rate, not treating the rate as the only cost that matters.
