Perquisites

The short version
Perquisites (perks) are non-cash benefits provided by an employer - rent-free accommodation, a company car, stock options - that carry a taxable value of their own, on top of your regular salary.
A perquisite's value is calculated using specific rules (which vary by benefit type) and added to your taxable salary, even though you never received it as cash - a company-provided rent-free house or a below-market-rate loan from your employer, for instance, each have a computed taxable value. This is a common surprise for employees who assume only their cash salary is taxable; the tax department treats a meaningful non-cash benefit as real income, valued and taxed accordingly.
