PAN Card

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a unique 10-character identifier used across nearly every financial transaction in India - it's how the tax department links your income, investments, and TDS together under one identity.

PAN is required to file a tax return, open most financial accounts, complete KYC, and for high-value transactions like property purchases - it's the single identifier that lets the tax department connect your income, TDS, and investments across different institutions into one coherent picture. Not providing your PAN in a transaction that requires it (like a property sale) often triggers a much higher TDS rate as a penalty - see our TDS on property sale article for a concrete example.
