NEFT vs. RTGS vs. IMPS: Which Transfer Method to Use When

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version RTGS is for large transfers of ₹2 lakh or more, settled individually and instantly; NEFT settles in batches with no minimum or maximum; IMPS is instant for any amount up to ₹5 lakh - all three now run 24x7, so the old 'bank hours only' rule no longer applies.

The three options, in plain terms

  • RTGS (Real-Time Gross Settlement): for large amounts - a mandatory minimum of ₹2 lakh per transaction, no RBI-set upper cap (though your bank may set its own). Each transaction settles individually and immediately.
  • NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer): no minimum or maximum amount. Settles in half-hourly batches rather than instantly - a small delay compared to RTGS or IMPS, but suitable for virtually any amount.
  • IMPS (Immediate Payment Service): instant settlement for any amount up to ₹5 lakh, including bank holidays - the go-to option when RTGS's ₹2 lakh minimum doesn't apply and instant settlement matters.

All three now run 24x7

A meaningful change from a few years ago: NEFT and RTGS now operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including weekends and holidays - the older restriction to banking hours no longer applies to any of the three.

A simple way to choose

Sending ₹2 lakh or more, and don't need it to arrive within seconds? RTGS. Sending less than ₹2 lakh and want it there immediately? IMPS. Sending an amount where timing isn't urgent (a scheduled bill payment, a planned transfer)? NEFT works fine and typically carries lower or no charges.

(Limits, timing, and 24x7 availability checked as of September 2026.)

The takeaway

The "right" method depends on amount and urgency, not personal preference - and unlike a few years ago, none of the three require waiting for the next business day anymore.
