Form 16

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version Form 16 is the annual certificate your employer issues showing your salary, deductions claimed, and TDS deducted through the year - the single most useful document for filing a salaried employee's return.

Issued annually by employers, Form 16 has two parts: Part A summarizes TDS deducted and deposited each quarter, and Part B details your salary breakup, exemptions (like HRA), and deductions claimed. Most salaried employees' return filing starts by cross-checking Form 16 against Form 26AS/AIS to confirm the numbers match what the tax department already has on record.

(Note: the Income-tax Act, 2025 renumbers this as Form 130 from 1 April 2026 - the document's purpose and content are unchanged, only its formal reference number.)
