Credit Card Grace Period

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version The grace period is the interest-free window between a purchase and the payment due date - typically 20-50 days depending on when in the billing cycle you spend - but it disappears entirely if you carry forward even a small unpaid balance.

Purchases made right after a billing cycle starts get closer to the full grace period (commonly quoted as 20-50 days total); purchases made just before the cycle closes get much less. Crucially, this interest-free window applies only if the full statement balance is paid by the due date - carrying forward even a small unpaid amount typically means new purchases start accruing interest immediately too, not just the old balance. See our article on credit card traps for the fuller picture of how this interacts with minimum-due payments.
