Chargeback

✓ Last verified 14 Sep 2026
The short version A chargeback reverses a card payment through your bank/card network, used to dispute an unauthorized transaction or a legitimate merchant dispute - a real recourse mechanism worth knowing about, distinct from a UPI transaction, which generally has no equivalent reversal mechanism once completed.

If a card transaction was unauthorized, fraudulent, or a legitimate merchant dispute (goods never received, a duplicate charge), a chargeback lets you dispute it through your card issuer, who investigates and can reverse the charge. This is a meaningful practical difference from UPI, where a completed transaction generally has no equivalent, straightforward reversal mechanism - reinforcing why UPI safety habits (see our UPI safety article) matter even more, since prevention is more important than recourse after the fact for UPI specifically.
